Woon Family Scholarship Overview

The Woon Family Scholarship is an opportunity offered by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) to support women pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields. This scholarship provides financial assistance to promising students who demonstrate a commitment to their education and career development in STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

  • Open to candidates who identify as women.
  • Applicants must be planning to attend school full-time.
  • Applicants must not have full funding for tuition, fees, and books or equivalent.
  • Open to undergraduate students only.

About Nicole Woon

• Nicole Woon was born in Santa Monica, CA.
• She attended the University of Pennsylvania as part of the Jerome Fisher Management & Technology Program, an interdisciplinary coordinated dual degree program.
• She graduated in 2014 with:
  • M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Two B.S.E. degrees in Bioengineering and Management (Entrepreneurship and Innovation).

Early Inspiration

• Nicole was inspired by her parents, David and Alice, who encouraged her to explore STEAM disciplines.
• Her father, an engineer at The Aerospace Corporation, often included her in “Take Your Kid to Work Day,” sparking her early interest in technology.
• Her passion for engineering grew through experiences like:
  • Visiting museums across the U.S. to learn about technology.
  • Participating in UCLA Engineering’s high school summer research program, where she worked with researchers at the Center for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology (CASIT).

SWE Involvement

• Nicole has been an active life member of the Society of Women Engineers since 2010.
• She began her SWE journey at the University of Pennsylvania, where she held various leadership roles, including section president.
• Over the years, she has served in numerous local, regional, and society roles within SWE.

Career and Community Engagement

• Nicole is passionate about enhancing workplace culture and has actively worked on initiatives aimed at:
  • Attracting and retaining talent.
  • Accelerating career growth.
  • Building strong professional relationships.
• She has played key roles in member engagement as the Membership Co-Chair for Women of WDG (Windows and Devices Group) and Connected Women’s Groups.
